Properly operate the motorcycle clutch to ensure safe driving and enhance the driving experience!
Release date:2025.04.02

All of our motorcycle models have the existence of clutches, but some are automatic clutches (such as ordinary scooters, small curved beams), some are manual clutches, we often can access the straddle, most of them are manual clutches, its operation is the focus of our discussion today.

First of all, there is a point to be clear, the clutch design is used to transmit engine power or a device that briefly cuts off engine power during driving, in a normal state, it is in a closed state, that is, we often say that the normally closed state. That is to say, the clutch under normal circumstances we do not need to operate it, only when there is a need to operate it, such as starting, shifting, stopping, and importantly, is a short operation, not a long operation.

In daily riding, in fact, we have some motorcycle friends of the operation of the motorcycle clutch, or can not deeply understand the above content, often operate the clutch for a long time, thus forming some bad operating habits, this operating habit not only accelerates the wear of the clutch, but also leaves some hidden dangers for the safe driving of the motorcycle.

For example, when you like a long downhill, hold the clutch for a long time to step on the brake, which will not only wear the clutch disc, but also have a large safety hazard, once an emergency occurs, it is difficult to control. For example, when we pinch the clutch downhill, when the speed is fast, if we are not careful or in an emergency suddenly release the clutch, the rear wheel will be subjected to the emergency braking of the engine, people are easy to fly forward, at the same time, due to the emergency braking of the rear wheel, it is also easy to throw the tail.

Therefore, our correct approach is not to pinch the clutch downhill or sliding, use the engine brake, downhill or sliding with gear, not only increase the stability of the motorcycle forward, but also more safe, in daily driving to cultivate this good operating habits.

In daily driving, the clutch has three states:

1. Closed state:

In this state, the clutch inside the clutch is in a closed state, the engine power is directly transmitted to the gearbox, the gearbox is transmitted to the drive wheel, and the vehicle is directly driven, which is generally a normal driving state.

2, semi-linkage state:

In this case, the clutch plate is in a semi-separated state, and part of the engine's power is transferred to the gearbox. This is usually done when the vehicle is starting or under certain circumstances. However, this operation will have a certain amount of wear on the clutch disc, and it should be avoided for a long time in daily operation. And in the semi-linkage state, the greater the engine output power, the greater the transmitted power, the more severe the wear of the clutch disc, while the friction will produce a lot of heat, if the heat is not distributed in time, when the temperature rises to a certain extent, the clutch disc is directly burned. So this is why we have been emphasizing not to operate the clutch for a long time, light wear, heavy burn.

The clutch plate of the clutch has a life (thickness), and it needs to be replaced when it is worn to a certain extent, and the service life of the clutch is directly related to whether we can operate the clutch correctly in our daily life.

3, separation state:

This is easy to understand, that is, the clutch is in a completely separated state, which is generally used for shifting and parking operations. But here we have to understand that although we operate the clutch to separate, in fact, because the clutch has multiple clutch pieces, it is almost impossible to completely separate, and usually the clutch will have a certain degree of slight contact. In the process of driving our motorcycle, we pinch the clutch, we can still feel that there is still a certain power transmission between the engine and the rear wheel, this is how it comes, but the power transmission has been very small.

So in this case, actually for the clutch, there will be a certain amount of wear, so, in our daily operation, we should try to avoid such operation for a long time, because it will wear our clutch plate and shorten the life of the clutch plate.

After understanding the above 3 points, we should know under what circumstances to operate the clutch - when there is a need to operate the clutch, do not operate the clutch for a long time.

How to operate the clutch correctly

1, daily driving motorcycle, in order to keep us stable start, start should slowly release the clutch, if the clutch release speed is too fast, the car is easy to stall. If the engine starts at a high speed and the clutch is released too quickly, the whole car can easily fly out or tilt its head, causing an accident. Therefore, when we start, combined with the engine speed, slowly release the clutch, smooth start, after the vehicle starts, completely release the clutch, minimize the half linkage time of the clutch, reduce the wear of the clutch.

2. Shift gears. When the motorcycle shifts, it should also be operated in accordance with the first point, and after the shift is completed, slowly release the clutch to reduce vehicle movement.

3, when stopping, it should be combined with the clutch, slow down and slow down, when the speed slows down, control the clutch separation until the stop.

4, if you can be very skilled in clutch operation, you can also increase a lot of driving pleasure. Control the engine speed, gear, clutch operation, you can achieve a lot of motorcycle driving difficult action. For example, burning tires, cocking your head, spinning in circles, etc. However, these are some high-risk operations, but also the damage to the clutch is relatively large, or as little as possible to carry out such operations. Of course it's not. It doesn't matter. But safety is something that needs constant attention.
