Motorcycle knowledge: Advantages and disadvantages of the three transmission forms of chain/belt/drive shaft
Release date:2024.11.13

At present, there are three more mainstream motorcycle drive methods, including disk chain, belt, drive shaft. However, each transmission system will have a different point of view, as well as different advantages and disadvantages. Today, let's find these 3 basic transmission systems in the following article.

1. Chain drive system (sprocket gear)

The chain disk system is the most common motorcycle drivetrain today and is the most widely used, from bicycles to motorcycles. The first reason is that manufacturing is cheap, but efficiency and durability are high, and it is easy to maintain, adjusting the gear ratio is as easy as replacing the gear and disk at will.

But there is a disadvantage, everyone should know, the chain is very easy to make noise, if not regularly cleaned and maintained, will soon cause wear, and there are regular adjustments. Many chains must be cleaned regularly with cleaning chemicals, and then sprayed with maintenance fluid or clean viscous oil, which will help extend the life of the chain drive system and avoid rust and corrosion.

2. Belt drive

For the motorcycle driven by the belt, the more common is the American cruise or prince's high-end models (or pedal motorcycles), such as Harley-Davidson, Indian, etc., in recent years, the country has also become popular. This form of drivetrain is enclosed to protect it from soil and dirt. The advantages of the belt transmission system are less vibration noise and more convenient maintenance.

However, in addition to being relatively quieter and easier to avoid dust with the transmission system, the belt drive system also has some disadvantages, mainly the high cost of maintenance and replacement, due to the complexity of the parts, it is difficult to replace themselves, and requires skilled and experienced professionals and tools to handle.

3. Shaft drive system

Speaking of axle driven motorcycles, they are usually more common in BMW's large adventure cars, such as the R1200GS and other models. Compared with the above two drive systems, the advantage of the shaft drive system is that the system is completely independent, so if there is no fault or internal damage, there is almost no need to open and check the shaft regularly, let alone frequently to maintain. The cost of care and maintenance is also very low, only the internal lubrication fluid needs to be replaced, and most internal parts are very durable, so the wear rate of the system when used is very low.

In addition, the disadvantage of this drive shaft system is that it is difficult to find the cause of damage, due to complexity and dependence on components, it will take a long time and require high maintenance costs, and it is very troublesome to break once.

Another disadvantage is that it is not suitable for those who like speed, because the system will go through many stages in operation, due to the lateral torque when the shaft rotates in the direction of rotation, making the car tilt in the opposite direction of the shaft rotation, so the shaft drive is not suitable for high-speed models.
