In a few simple steps, determine if your motorcycle brake skin needs to be replaced
Release date:2024.07.18

Checking the thickness of the brake skin is the first step in maintaining the brake device.

Disc brakes are different from drum brakes, even if the brake skin is worn, the gap between the pull rod and the foot will not change, so the most important thing is to directly observe the thickness of the brake skin, usually at this time it is best to check the brake disc together.

Depending on the degree of suitability of the brake skin material and the use environment, sometimes unexpected wear and tear will occur, so special care is needed.

(1) In addition to the brake skin will be worn, the brake disc will also be damaged

If the degree of wear reaches about half of the new product, the wear of the brake skin will become very fast. If it is all worn out, it will cause the metal sheet inside to be directly clamped on the brake disc, which will not only make the brake insensitive, but also cause the disc to be abnormally worn and unable to be used, so pay special attention.

If you want to ignore seasonal and climatic factors and have the same brake performance at any time, the key maintenance items of the brake device must be regular maintenance of the brake caliper and replacement of the brake oil.

As long as you usually pay attention to the brake device, you can avoid the brake skin wearing out when you do not notice, causing the metal sheet directly to the brake disc on the worst "brake failure" phenomenon.

Maybe you don't know, in fact, the loss speed of the brake skin is divided into the whole new product and when the part is less, the wear speed of the two is not the same.

Once the brake skin is reduced, the friction consumables attached to the brake skin will reduce the heat capacity and reduce the heat release due to the reduction in volume, resulting in faster wear. That is to say, compared with the new time, the wear speed of the brake skin will increase after the loss of a part.

If you are not aware of this and think that "there is about half, so you can ride the same distance (refers to the new brake skin to wear half of the riding distance)" and ignore the check, it will become until the wear is fast, or the metal tip clip to the brake disc to produce metal friction sound, you will notice the wear of the brake skin, so pay special attention to it.

In addition, when checking the degree of brake wear, it is absolutely necessary to check the degree of wear of the brake disc. Brake discs are usually made of stainless steel, cast iron or carbon fiber, and in order to allow the rider to continue riding in rainy days, they will use stainless steel products that will not rust and can maintain braking force at low temperatures.

Considering the relationship between the brake skin and the brake disc, perhaps many people will think that only the brake skin will be reduced, and the brake disc will not wear, but in fact, these two things will wear.

(2) According to the different material of the brake skin, the degree of wear will also change

The degree of damage to the brake disc will also vary depending on the material of the brake skin. In general, the brake leather made of organic materials causes the least damage, and the brake leather made of metal is not only more sensitive, but more likely to cause wear of the brake disc.

Two factors that cause brake disc wear:

1. The degree of fit with brake leather

2. Greatly affected by the use environment

(3) Use a metal ruler to check the bump on the surface of the brake disc

When actually judging the service life of the brake disc, it is important not to check the outside thickness, but to pay attention to the thickness of the disc in contact with the brake skin. Place a metal ruler from the center along the outside and check for bumps on the side where the disc is in contact with the brake skin. Replace the disc if the wear limit is reached.

However, depending on the contact position of the brake skin and the brake disc, sometimes the outer thickness is still below the wear limit, but the inside has been greatly reduced. Even the surface of the brake disc sometimes has wavy marks, so if it cannot be confirmed from the appearance, you can use a metal ruler to check.

If there is a small scar like a vinyl record, it is likely that sand and gravel will be sandwiched between the brake skin and the brake disc when riding on a rainy day.

Although the brake disc with holes on the surface can improve the water resistance of the brake disc surface, it can effectively exert the braking force in rainy days, but in order not to leave traces on the disc, it is recommended to clean the dirt on the brake disc immediately after riding in rainy days.

In addition, if you are using a non-floating fixed brake disc, you can ask the car shop to help smooth the surface of the disc.
