The focus adjustment and distance-height adjustment methods for motorcycle headlights!
Release date:2026.08.06

The motorcycle headlight is extremely important for drivers when driving at night. Without a headlight, it's like a blind person walking. It's extremely dangerous. The motorcycle light doesn't have to be as bright as possible. That would also be unsafe for night driving. Although you can see the road clearly, for the driver coming from the opposite direction, it might cause temporary blindness for them, which could lead to an accident. Therefore, we must adjust the motorcycle headlight. This is very important for the safety of night driving.

How to adjust the focus and distance of the motorcycle headlights?

Let me explain here. Generally, the headlights of motorcycles (scooters) are slightly tilted to the right, and the left and right positions are usually not adjustable. They can only be adjusted in height, although there are some that can be adjusted. This is not a problem with the circuit of the headlights. However, people who have replaced the bulbs will encounter such a problem.

By the way: The reason why the focus of the replaced bulb is not accurate is that the position of the filament is off. You can place the old bulb next to the new one for comparison, and then check how much the filament position of the new bulb deviates.

If the position of the filament of the new bulb is too low, the focus of the headlights will be very close. To adjust it, you need to change the height of the bulb positioning ring. If the position of the filament of the new bulb is too high, the focus of the headlights will spread out. Add a homemade circular iron wire ring pad in front of the bulb positioning ring, and the relative height position of the filament can be lowered. After adjusting the focus, the distance of the headlights' illumination on the motorcycle can be easily adjusted.

Slightly loosen the screws on both sides of the headlights, place the vehicle on a flat surface, turn the gear lever to turn on the headlights, slightly move the position of the headlights up and down, aim the focus of the headlights at the ground 20-30 meters in front of the vehicle, then tighten the screws that fix the headlights. If there is a left-right deviation in the headlights, it will be more troublesome. First, check if the steering wheel is level, then turn the bracket to adjust the headlights. When the bracket is deformed significantly, a simpler method is:锉 (scrape) the installation hole on one side of the front headlight bracket into a long circular shape, and then tighten it with screws, which will give you the possibility to move left and right.

Adjustment of the height of the motorcycle headlight:

Most people will adjust this type of front headlight, as the design is quite intuitive. Just use a screwdriver or a socket to loosen the two bolts that fix the headlights a little, and then slightly push up and down to adjust the height. (In fact, for this type of design, you can also appropriately DIY to adjust the left and right illumination range of the lights. Just slightly grind the two bolt brackets in the horizontal direction towards the fuel tank direction, and then make the appropriate adjustment.)

(There is no need to specify exactly how much to adjust, because for these mechanical parts, even a 1mm distance can cause a significant change.)

Compared to the method mentioned above, this one is actually easier to adjust and is even better. However, many people just can't find the right place. Most cars only require a pair of adjustable wrenches to make the adjustment. First, find the adjustment bolt, like the one in the picture. This is the new 150 model of mine. It is located in front of the fuel tank, near the headlight cover. As shown in the picture, it is the white screw on the left front turn signal that moves backward towards the center.

Here is an overall picture: You should be able to clearly see that area. Once you locate it, then use a hacksaw to turn that bolt. If the headlights are shining too high and are even reaching the sky, then turn the hacksaw in a clockwise direction. You can clearly see that the light from the headlights is descending downward. If the illumination is too low and the distance is not far, then use the hacksaw in an anti-clockwise direction. At this time, you can clearly see that the car light is moving upward.

Notes:

(1) The direction in which the car lights shine is usually fixed and generally cannot be adjusted. Most of them are on the right side. There are also some on the left side.

(2) It is recommended to adjust the car lights at night, on a flat and straight road with a distance of about 150 meters or more.

(3) There is no absolute value for adjusting the car lights. It is better to choose a distance that is more comfortable for the driver.
