I. Briefly explain: What is a cylinder gasket?

 

 

 

 

That is the thin sealing gasket sandwiched between the cylinder head and the cylinder block, right in the middle of the cylinder. This is the cylinder gasket.

II. The main reasons for the daily damage of cylinder gaskets

 

 

The majority of cylinder gasket problems are usually caused by minor issues during daily vehicle use and maintenance:

 

 

Engine overheating and boiling over:

 

 

Water-cooled vehicles, such as those with insufficient coolant, malfunctioning cooling fans, prolonged high-speed operation, heavy-load climbing, and long-distance cycling in summer, actually the high temperature is the primary culprit for damaging cylinder liners, which is what we commonly refer to as "scrambling the cylinder liners".

 

 

2. Inconsistent assembly and disassembly procedures and improper maintenance practices:

 

 

When disassembling the cylinder head for maintenance, the screws were loosely tightened or loosened randomly, and the torque was uneven. (Actually, there is a proper method for installing the cylinder cover.) The contact surface of the cylinder body was not pressed tightly, which makes it prone to air leakage and water seepage in the later stage.

 

 

 

 

 

3. The cylinder head surface shows deformation:

 

 

After the engine has been exposed to high temperatures, the metal will slightly warp and the contact surfaces will no longer be smooth. Even if a new gasket is replaced, it is difficult to achieve a tight seal.

 

 

4. Natural wear and tear of vehicles:

 

 

If a car has traveled a long distance and has been in use for a long time, the cylinder gasket will gradually age and harden, losing its original elasticity. As a result, the sealing effect will naturally be greatly reduced.

 

 

5. Poor riding habits:

 

 

Starting the engine cold and then slamming on the accelerator, engaging in violent riding every day, and constantly keeping the engine running at full throttle for long periods - these actions result in a significant temperature difference between the engine's hot and cold states, which will greatly shorten the lifespan of the cylinder gasket.

 

 

III. Cylinder gasket damage, the visible manifestations of the vehicle:

 

 

 

Without the need for professional equipment, even during daily rides, you can notice with your naked eyes when any two tires are worn out. Be especially vigilant when this happens.

The water temperature was abnormally high, and even a short ride caused the engine to overheat.

2: The water tank and the backup water jug keep emitting bubbles, and even after stopping the vehicle, water keeps flowing out.

3: If the engine oil turns milky white and resembles milk, this is a typical sign that water has entered the oil.

4. : The vehicle's power performance is significantly reduced. It struggles to accelerate and lacks strength when climbing hills.

5: The exhaust pipe keeps emitting white smoke, which is not the normal water vapor seen in winter.

6: The vehicle experiences idle shaking, unstable operation, and is prone to sudden engine shutdowns.

7: At the cylinder head joint area, there are occurrences of oil leakage, water leakage, and dampness turning black.

 

8: The oil volume has suddenly increased without any reason. This is caused by cooling water flowing into the crankcase.

Four. What will happen if you delay and don't repair it?

 

 

Many cyclists adopt a "get-by" attitude. However, they don't realize that leaving minor cylinder gasket problems unaddressed will eventually lead to major problems:

 

 

When coolant mixes with the engine oil, the lubrication effect of the oil is immediately lost. In mild cases, it can cause cylinder seizure and wear on the crankshaft. In severe cases, the engine will be completely ruined.

 

 

The continuous high temperature will also cause the piston to be damaged, the cylinder block to be injured, and the flat surface of the cylinder head to be completely deformed. Eventually, it won't just be a simple replacement of the cylinder gasket; it will be a major engine repair.

 

 

 

 

So: The cylinder gasket may seem like a small component, but it actually controls the three core parts of the engine - water, oil, and gas.

 

 

Pay more attention to any abnormal conditions of the vehicle on a regular basis, develop good driving habits, and deal with problems promptly. This is the most cost-effective way to maintain a vehicle.
