Does the chain have anything to do with fuel consumption? Why is the motorcycle taller after replacement?
Release date:2024.06.27

Is the motorcycle chain related to fuel consumption?

The answer is yes. It's not something that can't be explained.

As one of the common transmission systems of motorcycles, the role of the chain in the entire transmission process is self-evident, in addition to the power transmission that we can reach a consensus, it actually has some obscure performance. That includes fuel consumption.

The fuel consumption of motorcycles is in fact related to resistance, the smaller the resistance, the lower its fuel consumption, and conversely, it will become larger.

As the most important component in the engine power transmission process, the chain will affect the actual fuel consumption performance of the vehicle. The reason is very simple, it will certainly have resistance during operation, but the operating resistance of the chain can be large or small.

If you normally maintain, comply with the adjustment, and replace the original car in accordance with the factory condition, then its operating resistance will be in the best state, basically negligible, at this time the theoretical fuel consumption of the vehicle has nothing to do with the chain.

It is also based on the existence of this phenomenon. At that time when the road car was running on the street, Chongqing Yingang Motorcycle invented a fuel saver and played a slogan of saving fuel for 1000 yuan.

Its working principle is similar to the flywheel assembly of a bicycle, once the vehicle receives oil during the driving process, the rear wheel will glide freely, and then the purpose of saving fuel can be achieved. The process is similar to what some cars do in economic mode today.

Therefore, please believe that the chain and fuel consumption is absolutely related.

Ii. Why will fuel consumption be higher after replacing the chain?

No love for no reason, no hate for no reason, and no fuel consumption skyrocketing for no reason.

The reason why there will be such a performance after changing the chain is nothing more than the following three reasons.

1. The chain is too tight, some repair shops in order to avoid the replacement of the chain in a short period of time too loose phenomenon, will deliberately reduce the up and down amplitude as much as possible, which will virtually increase the operating resistance, and then there will be high fuel consumption performance.

Therefore, remember that at any time, we must adjust the free range of the chain to the appropriate range (most models are 15 ~ 20mm), and cannot have too tight performance, so that not only because of the large operating resistance, there will be high fuel consumption, but also accelerate wear, and even the possibility of breaking the chain.

2. Different specifications, the motorcycle drive chain is also a more common specification of 428, 428H, 520, 525, 530, etc., and the corresponding sprockets of different chains are not the same, in simple terms, the larger the number in front of the chain will be wider, the better the tensile force will be, but at the same time the operating resistance will increase.

Therefore, when replacing the motorcycle chain, the specification can not be easily changed, the original is 428 you will change 428, the original is 520 you must install 520, there is no need to choose a wider chain for the so-called tensile strength, after all, the combination of the factory is the most reasonable.

3. The speed ratio is different, the sprocket group of the motorcycle will have a different speed ratio, and different combinations will have different power and speed performance. Assuming the same size of the front sprocket, the smaller the rear sprocket, the higher the speed of the vehicle will be, and the larger the rear sprocket, the stronger the low twist will be. But with that comes changes in fuel consumption.

If the front sprocket of the original factory is 15 teeth and the rear sprocket is 38 teeth, in order to pursue low torsion and climbing ability to replace the rear sprocket with 43 teeth or a larger model, then the fuel consumption will definitely increase, because this is the most direct manifestation of "slowing down and twisting".

To sum up, the fuel consumption of the motorcycle and the chain must have an inevitable connection, so in addition to normal maintenance and lubrication, we must strictly control the gear speed ratio and chain specifications, and do not easily change the original combination, which will make the performance more ideal, but also avoid some unnecessary trouble.
